Beach fitness
June 13th, 2009
Sunbathing, good food, fine wine and relaxation may be top of the list on the summer-holiday itinerary, but for those who want to stay active on holiday there are plenty of sports and exercises that are perfect for the beach. The sun, sea and sand provide the perfect backdrop for exercises that are both fun and beneficial for your body. If you’re with friends, there are lots of sports well suited to playing on the sand. Beach volleyball provides an effective workout for arms and legs, whilst beach frisbee works the upper back and arm muscles as well as providing a good cardiovascular workout. If you don’t have anyone to play with, don’t let that stop you getting active. Swimming in the sea provides an all body cardiovascular and strength workout, and if you fancy going underwater, scuba diving and snorkelling are great ways to burn calories without feeling like you’re doing strenuous exercise. Running in the tide, with the water level between ankle and knee height, provides resistance and therefore a harder workout than just running on the sand – just make sure that you are running in an area free of rocks! Many hotels and resorts run courses such as aerobics, yoga and pilates, so it is worth checking out what your hotel has to offer before you get there. The summer holiday is a great opportunity to get fit and have fun at the same time. Remember to drink lots of water and don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!
