Cool down and Keep fit in the Swimming Pool

June 18th, 2009

With summer upon us and the prospect of long, hot days, the perfect way to cool down and stay healthy is in the swimming pool. Swimming is one of the most beneficial exercises, building strength and endurance as well as providing an excellent cardio workout. The pressure and resistance that water provides means your body is working harder than usual. Swimming can help to tone all of the major muscle groups, especially when swimming front-crawl or backstroke. It can also be a great way to lose weight. Swimming for an hour can, on average, burn more calories than running six miles in an hour, with the benefits of less sweat! 30 minutes of swimming at a steady pace burns over 200 calories. Swimming helps to boost circulation, as your heart has to work harder to pump blood to all parts of the body. As well as physical health benefits, an hour in the pool will leave you feeling relaxed, and studies have shown that people feel happier after swimming. If you have a swimming pool at your disposal but don’t fancy doing laps, other activities such as water aerobics can provide a brilliant workout. Exercises such as running and star jumps are often more safe when done in the pool, as water supports the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint injury. Swimming is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to stay fit, making you feel great inside and out!
