April 1st, 2009
Cholesterol is a fat like, lipid, produced by the liver and manufactured by the foods we consume. Half of heart disease deaths in the US have been a result of raised cholesterol and lipid levels. So what exactly does raised cholesterol do to us? Higher levels of cholesterol result in the arteries eventually becoming narrower due to calcification and in elasticity preventing oxygen from the blood getting to the heart. Angina can result from this and eventually even heart attack. Smaller plaques might rupture causing blood clots. These blood clots can eventually block the arteries and cause a heart attack.
