How do weight loss pills work

October 7th, 2009

Different weight loss pills work in different ways, it all depends on what ingredients the pill contains.

Appetite suppresants- Sibutramine(meridia), phentermine (adipex-p, fastin), diethylpropion(tenuate)

These all affect the hypothalmus in the brain where the appetite is regulated.  They affect the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine which create the feeling of being full after a large meal.  With lots of these chemicals floating round the brain you feel full up so don’t want to eat more.

Prescription fat blockers- Orlistat (Xenical) inhibit the action of the enzyme called lipase.  When we eat fatty foods, lipase breaks down the fat when it gets in our intestinal tract.  When we have a lipase inhibitor part of the fat is removed from the body through bowel movements instead of being absorbed by the body.
