How to cut out sugar and why

November 11th, 2009

Most of us today are sugar addicts, we have been pumped full of sugar since we were kids.  Sugar tastes good and is addictive, hence the food companies packing our food full of it.  But why should we stop, is it honestly that bad?

  1. Sugar increases fat storage
  2. Sugar disrupts normal brain function
  3. Sugar makes our health deteriorate and makes us age quicker

Sugar increases fat storage - the most important hormone when it comes to weight loss and health is insulin and inulin is controlled by us, through our diet.  Sugar directly affects our insulin levels.  When we eat sugar and it enters our bloodstream too quickly we have a spike in our blood sugar level (hyperglycemia.)  If we are very active this can be burned off but if we are not this is a very bad thing.  As a result of this high blood sugar (glucose) our body releases more insulin.  Insulin takes the excess glucose and tries to find somewhere to store it.  if muscles are full or have insulin resistance then the glucose will be stored in fat cells, something you don’t want to happen.  With constant spikes of sugar our body becomes more and more insulin resistant leading to you getting fatter and in the long run possibly becoming diabetic.

Sugar disrupts normal brain function – Everyone knows the feeling you get from eating a chocolate bar, that good feeling, but like with drugs that give a short term good feeling there are side effects.  Sugar leads to anxiety and depression to did you know.  In kids sugar can result in mood swings and attention problems.  The brain is made up of fat and although runs on glucose gets problems when too much sugar is effecting it.

Sugar makes our health deteriorate and makes us age quicker - Too much sugar will lower our immune system, feed bad bacteria growth and leads to mineral deficiency.  Aging is when our body breaks down faster than it can repair, diabetes speeds up the aging process so does osteoporosis and heart disease.  Cutting out sugar will certainly slow down aging.

So you have decided now it may be a good idea to cut out sugar, so how can you go about it.

  1. Cut out the obvious, sweets, chocolate, anything containing chocolate, crisps, biscuits.
  2. Get good sugar from fruit and vegetables
  3. Avoid bread but if you really want it have it on workout days close to your workout time.
  4. Get a lot of fish, fish increases insulin sensitivity
  5. Exercise regularly, helping to burn fat and get rid of the damages of sugar
  6. Read labels on all food and drinks, lots of healthy drinks that are marketed as being very healthy are full of sugar “Always read the label.”
