Peanut butter as a fitness food

April 5th, 2010

Peanut butter is not the first thing that comes to mind for the average person when told to think of a fitness food, and many people into fitness and bodybuilding say they don’t touch it, but actually in my opinion its one of the best fitness foods around.  Peanut butter is tasty, inexpensive and great for our health.  Why?

  • Fills you up- if you are following a strict diet and need something to fill you up then peanut butter is great as it is high in protein and high in fiber.
  • Reduces risk of heart disease- A peanut butter sandwich can help reduce your chances of heart disease.
  • High in calories- if you are someone who is having to follow a very high calorie diet then eating can be very expensive, yet peanut butter has 100 calories in a tablespoon which probably costs about 10p, a great way to get inexpensive calories in.  This does not mean you should have ten tablespoons but just helps you top up a bit whilst staying part of a healthy diet.
  • High in protein- two tablespoons of peanut butter provides around 7g of protein.
  • Contains fiber- not a lot but about 1g per tablespoon.
