Personal training and perfect posture

May 6th, 2009

Most of us work in offices therefore tend to be sitting in chairs facing computers most of the day, apart from me who tends to be in the gym.  When you sit at a computer your back muscles relax and you begin to slouch aspecially if haven’t got the best computer set up with a posture chair, a foot rest and an adjustable height monitor.  If you were only sitting at a computer one day a month this wouldn’t necessarily be  a problem but if you are sitting at a computer every day for most of the day this becomes a problem.  Although most of us tend to slouch and walk with our shoulders curved forwards, this can be reversed and makes a huge difference to our health and our personal image.

When working at a computer our shoulders become slouched and round forward, this makes our chest look smaller and when walking we look less confident and more huddled over. This posture I am referring to is equally caused by weightlifiters who over work the chest and not the back.  This can be reversed in the following ways-

Partner stretching- with your hands placed little finger to little finger on your back just above your pelvis and bringing your shoulders back as far as you can aiming to get them to touch, your partner pushes your elbows together gradusally until you tell them to stop where you are at a full stretch.  Hold this stretch for 30-40 seconds after every workout three to four times.

Getting the proper work equipment- at work the government has set certain working standards which if you keep to will certainly help your posture.  Get a good posture chair, so your back is supported around the base keeping you upright.  Get a foot rest so your knees are at the right angle to avoid back pain.  Get an adjustable monitor so you don’t have to drop or raie your head to see the computer.

Deep tissue massage- deep tissue massage across the back and chest can help release muscular tension holding you in poor posture.

Personal training- a good personal trainer can design you a workout so you work all muscle groups evenly so you don’t develop any imbalances and also work on your weak areas that you need to concentrate on.
