How much protein to eat daily?

January 3rd, 2009

This is a common question amongst bodybuilders, athletes and general people into strength training.  Our London personal trainers are constantly asked this question and there are many variations of the correct amount to eat.  When I first started bodybuilding I ate way too much protein and made myself sick plus I had swollen lymph nodes from over eating.  Its best to not overdo the protein even if you are trying to build alot of muscle carbs are very important not just the protein don’t go overboard on the protein neglecting other food.  These days I tell people not to worry about the per gram amount they are eating daily of protein but to eat 4-5 meals a day with your dinner including a large amount of protein such as a big steak or big piece of fish.  Then incorporate protein shakes in the day to but don’t eat more than around 25g of protein in one serving as the body can digest about this amount.  Look at your urine colour to check your not overdoing the protein. If your eating too much protein you should notice your urine to be bright yellow.  Aim to keep urine colour around a straw colour.  Watching your urine is a very important way of monitoring kidney filtration.  Different protein containing food can be absorbed by the body in different ways for example eggs can be easily digested by the body and that is why bodybuilders ate alot of these prior to protein shakes in the past as it was absorbed by the body the best.
