Should I be sore after every workout?

April 30th, 2009

Many people judge how good their workout was by how sore they are the following day or the day after that, however, this is not the best way to measure workout effectiveness.  Soreness is normal if you are a beginner to weightlifting or if you have just begun a new workout routine but soreness will lessen as time passes.  If you are aching after every workout then you may need to take longer rests to ensure you recover better.  The soreness aka DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness) you experience after workouts is caused by small tears in the muscle fibers, which is how the muscles respond when overloaded.  If you want to measure your workout intensity then you are better off measuring it by the amount of weight you are lifting during the session compared to the last session.
