Should you believe bodybuilding magazines and fitness magazines

March 13th, 2009

When I first started lifting weights and going to the gym I used to read bodybuilding magazines like FLEX and Musclemag and fitness magazines like Men’s health and Men’s Fitness.  Were they very useful? Only a few select articles and issues.  Most magazines of this sort are trying to sell supplements and advertising gym equipment.  Often the information they feed you is rubbish and more or less the same in every magazine.  I started reading online sites like bodybuilding.com which is one of the best resources for fitness and bodybuilding information.  Sites like these let readers write for them as well so give an unbiased write up.  Of all the magazines I read Flex was probably my least favourite, it contains lots of great pictures but not much useful content.  Of the fitness magazines mens fitness was my favourite, men’s health became too main stream a magazine full of articles on sex, nightlife, and music not what I was after from a fitness magazine.  If you want magazines with the best fitness and weightlifting content then sports specific magazines such as those on running and triathlon are good such as Runners World.  Muscular development is a good weightlifting magazine with a lot of unbiased articles but tends to be very supplement based and is not as good as it used to be when it first started.  Allot of these magazines start out great to attract the readers but then go after the advertising money and the magazine content drops.
