Slow reps vs fast reps

May 12th, 2010

If you are trying to build muscle you want to perform reps ranging from slow to medium paced not fast.  By lifting weights slowly you keep the muscles under tension for longer which helps them to grow, if you perform fast reps you put them under lower tension.  Slow reps also helps with isolation as the lifter tends to concentrate more on the range of motion isolating the musclegroup more.  Super slow training is a form of lifting weights where you spend up to around 10 seconds per rep this is really tough and a great way to build muscle if you have not tried it before.  I tend to train at an average tempo, changing the tempo on the last few reps so I can really feel the burn, I am not one of those weight lifters who comes to the last rep and tries to put the bar down as quick as possible.  Fast reps do have there place to, if you are super setting you may want to up the tempo to increase the burn on a particular set.  Listen to your body and feel what feels right, some bodybuilders increase the tempo throughout the set all the time, if it works for them why not.  Remember, whatever you find works for you in bodybuilding do it, just because everyone else likes training one way doesn’t mean you have to, we are all different.
