When to take protein shakes

April 1st, 2009

The best time to take protein shakes is directly after your workout or during your workout bit by bit.  I tend to take my protein shake directly after my workout so it hits the muscles straight away and can start the repair process when the muscle really needs it.  Taking a protein shake during your workout allows your muscles to get protein throughout the workout and is equally great but can make you feel a bit nauseous that is why I leave it to the end.  When else should you take a protein shake? At other times of the day is crucial to top up your protein level or if your really serious about putting on muscle fast then during the night once at around 2-3am.  Our bodies use protein during the night and often when we are sleeping is the time when our bodies get low on protein as we have been 8 hours roughly without food, by topping up once in the night it makes a difference as not only are we giving ourselves that extra bit of food but giving our bodies food when we are doing our biggest repair work, when we are sleeping.  However, this is not reccomended if you share your bed with someone else as bad breath after a chocolate protein shake in the middle of the night is not very desirable for your other half, and waking them up each night by turning the light on at 3am may result in you sleeping on the couch.
